As I sit here on this wicker couch, looking past the cast iron kettle, the tents and the fire juggling arena, and hammocks overlooking the mountain range in Northern Thailand, I see that I am in a great place to end this year. I am in Pai, a known hippy town with a strong Thai presence. I slept in another T-frame bamboo hut and had a cold shower that was pretty much outdoors. Last night was the first time in 7 months that I actually saw my breath in Thailand. It was a good day.
So yep, I made it up the 726 crazy hairpin, blind curves that make the roads in rural North Carolina look like child's play. Annnnd I did not get sick, so there! We stopped for lunch at a lovely place in the middle of no where yesterday with a pretty good view. And last night I had real pizza for dinner here in Pai where the owner was Italian. So yes, I was in a very happy place. The air is a little smoky and hazy this time of year from the annual rice patty burnings in Southern China all the way down to the coast of Thailand. Despite all of this though, last night the stars shown brightly in the dark sky. There were even some lanterns, that apparently farang like to light at night for no other reason that it is fun and cool.
I will be here in Pai for a few more days and there are plenty of things to do. Trekking, dancing, singing, waterfalls, saunas, great bars, great people and the like. Who knows what we will actually end up doing. I have an adorable little puppy cuddled up next to me right now and yesterday I go the most adorable Eskimo kiss from a kitten. Currently I am giving this rooster the stare of death since it is crowing like there is no tomorrow. Obviously, the stare of death is not working. Darn. Anyway I am excited for the day and I will attempt to keep you updated on how my year rounds out.
